We go to the hot vents of the deep-sea!
This expedition took us to the Mid Ocean Ridge in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists of the participating research facilities and universities including Professor Monika Bright and her PhD students Sabine Gollner, Sigrid Katz and Bettina Pflugfelder from the University of Vienna, and the journalist Andreas Laschober dived to the volcanoes and hydrothermal vents 2500 meters in the depth of the ocean. The objective of this expedition was to explore the fauna of this unique habitat.
Between October 25th and November 15th 2006 you had the opportunity to witness an expedition to the volcanoes of the deep-sea from your classroom.
Our journey started at the airport Vienna on October 20th. From there we will flew over London to San Diego, USA. On October 24th the US American research vessel Atlantis casted off and steamed directly southward to the Mid Oceanic Ridge in the East Pacific. After a five days transit we arrived at our destination: 9° 50 N, 104° 17´ W. In water depth of 2500 meters is a volcanic crater (caldera) bearing hot vents. We had 16 dives with the famous submersible Alvin, before we addressed the coast of Mexico and arrived the port of Manzanillo after 2 days on November 17th. On November 20th we flew back to Vienna.
On November 13th 2006 at 3 pm our telephone conference "Call to the deep“ took place.
